The Most Popular National Parks in the US
Mount Rainier National Park
Located in Washington, Mount Rainier National Park is America’s fifth-oldest national park. Visit in the spring, and you’ll see waterfalls; come in the summer, and you’ll enjoy wildflowers; or arrive in the fall when the leaves put on a colorful show.
Joshua Tree National Park
Named for the trees native to the park, 1,200-square-mile Joshua Tree National Park in California is slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. Much of the park is wilderness and includes parts of two deserts, the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. There are 12 self-guided nature trails (小徑), some as short as a half-mile, perfect for young children.
Bryce Canyon (峽谷) National Park
Despite its name, Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah is not a canyon at all. Instead, it is a collection of giant natural rocks up to 150 feet high. The red, orange and white colors of the rocks make for breathtaking views throughout the park. You can explore the rock formations on a scenic drive or up close and personally on a hike.
Grand Teton National Park
Located in Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park is home to various wildlife like bears, moose, otters and elk. There are several stand-out hiking trails. This park is connected to Yellowstone National Park by the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, so it’s incredibly easy to visit both parks in one trip.

All-powerful robots and artificial intelligence (AI) have long been the subjects of science fiction (小說). Now such technology means that fact is stranger than fiction. A science fiction story, The Land of Machine Memories, recently received a literary award.
It tells of a relationship between a human and AI. Li Xiao, the hero, is an explorer in the meta-verse (元宇宙) but she works as an engineer in the real world. In an experiment that has gone wrong, she loses all of her memories about her family. To recover them, she steps out onto a journey to explore the land of machine memories with her AI friend Neura. Li eventually regains her memories, gaining a deeper understanding and experience of the universe.
The novel was compiled using AI by Shen Yang, a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Tsinghua University in Beijing. The story was awarded second prize at the fifth youth popular science and science fiction competition, organized by the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.
Fu Changyi, director of the Science Fiction Committee of the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association, said he was aware of Shen’s long-term involvement in AI research, so he invited Shen to take part in the competition. Fu kept the fact that The Land of Machine Memories was generated by AI from the judges. He wanted to see if judges could realize what they were reading was the product of a machine.
For Fu, the outcome came as a surprise. Only one judge found out the story was produced by AI. Three out of the six judges voted for The Land of Machine Memories. By competition rules, works recommended by five judges can win a special prize, and works recommended by three judges can win a second prize.
One of the judges who were impressed by the AI story was Wang Yanzhong, a science fiction novelist. “At first I didn’t realize that it was created by AI. There’s no doubt that AI does better than many humans in terms of richness of pared with the works of beginners, it’s outstanding,” he said.

We all have good days and bad days with our health, and it can be difficult when our bodies are not performing the way we want them to or need them to. But our health is not out of our power to control. As a matter of fact, we all do have a super powerful tool right in our own heads. It’s our amazing brain.
Researchers that study the brain-body connection have shown in numerous experiments how the brain can be tricked into believing it is getting better. A simple sugar pill (藥片) can relieve pain or even cure an illness if the person believes that the pill being taken is genuine medicine.
That’s how powerful our brains are. They can make physical changes in our bodies beyond what we would normally give them credit for. There is a book I reread regularly called Super Brain. The authors, Deepak Chopra and Rudolph E. Tanzi, point out that any of us can, if we choose, set up or create our own placebo (安慰劑) effect at any time without any kind of pill.
What’s super interesting, as Chopra and Tanzi explain, is that “the effect isn’t limited to drugs, which is important to remember: anything you believe in can act as a placebo”.
They also ask where the relief comes from when the placebos are not actually doing anything themselves. They explain that it is simply “the mind telling the body to get well”. The body really believes what it was being told and then it relieves the pain or heals (治愈) the sickness because it believes it can. In other words, your mind can and does influence healing of all kinds including pain, disease and wounds that our bodies deal with from time to time.
That is certainly worth trying for most, if not all of us, whenever we want to cure our pain, problems or disease. These kinds of things are probably very helpful to do on a regular basis even.
28. What does the author think of the role of the brain in health
A. It’s strange. B. It’s powerless. C. It’s fantastic. D. It’s uncertain.
29. What does Super Brain suggest about placebo effects
A. They need pills. B. They’re limited to drugs.
C. They’re always temporary. D. They can be created mentally.
30. What is the key for a placebo to work according to the text
A. The degree of pain. B. The person’s belief.
C. The type of illness. D. The doctor’s advice.
31. What does the author want to say in the text
A. Placebos are ineffective in medicine.
B. Medicine is the best way to treat illness.
C. Pain cannot be relieved without medicine.
D. The mind influences the healing of the body.
D
We don’t know how different our life will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet—even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today—we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
32. Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050
A. Because there will be less face-to-face communication.
B. Because the number of people will become much smaller.
C. Because people won’t like making friends with each other.
D. Because people won’t communicate with each other much often.
33. The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A. how people will use robots to do the housework
B. that computers will do all the things for human beings
C. that machines like computers and robots will help people a lot
D. how people will use computers to communicate with each other
34. Which of the following will happen in 2050 according to the text
A. Environment will be more polluted with cars.
B. It won’t be difficult for people to travel to other planets.
C. The way of spending holidays will be the same as that of today.
D. The relationship between people will be more important than that of today.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. What our life will be like in the year 2050.
B. What high technology will appear in the year 2050.
C. How people will communicate in the year 2050.
D. How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050.

第二節(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
I teach high school history to a group of sixteen-to eighteen-year-olds. One particular student, Emily, is dangerously close to failing not only the entire course but the end-of-year exam. She must pass the course. Otherwise, she would have to repeat the entire year. That’s really a pity. She is the type of student who is incredibly bright, switched on and engaging. But she’s been hanging out with some naughty kids since her parents divorced (離異). It was a group of students who didn’t love learning and just wanted to have fun every day.
This part of the story occurred just after a paper was due. The paper was meant to assess just how well the students knew the course material that we had covered before the end-of-year exam. I handed out everyone’s marked and graded paper except for Emily’s, who was sitting with her friend group.
Looking at Emily, I said to her in a peaceful voice, “Emily, when I dismiss (解散) everyone else, I want to see you privately, please.”
A collective “ooooooh” hissed (發出噓聲) around the class. Emily was obviously a little bit worried about what this might be. I dismissed the class and sat opposite Emily, her paper in my hand.
“So, how do you think you did on your paper ” I asked.
Emily replied, “It seems that I don’t get the material, right Why do you always—”. But I gently interrupted with a warm smile, “You don’t get it That’s strange.”
“Actually, Emily, you’ve surprised us all,” I said, turning the paper to reveal a big, fat A+ next to her name. “Because your paper perfectly summarized the issues we discussed this semester about class difference in the Victorian Era. Obviously, this is your area of expertise,” I explained.
Emily’s eyes widened in disbelief. “W-what ”
I continued, “Your paper was the highest-scoring one I’ve ever had. I’m completely serious.”
注意:1. 續寫詞數應為150個左右;
2. 請按如下格式在答題卡的相應位置作答。
Emily was obviously shocked. __________________________________________________________________

W: Yes, and Mario was so lucky that he was found by them.
M: Definitely. He got into trouble while swimming in the sea. That’s really dangerous. If he hadn’t shouted for help, those two teens wouldn’t have found him.
W: That’s right. Fortunately, the boys were passing in their fishing boat. When they heard the shout, they pulled Mario into their boat and took him back to the beach.
M: That’s really heart-warming. Mario was grateful to the boys. Mario spent the night in the hospital, but he’s fine now. He’s already talking about getting back into the water. That’s brave.

M: Yes. We’d better go now. Mr Johnson is coming. Don’t be late for the class.
(Text 10)
M: I have been a keen bicycle rider for about nine years. When I began bicycling, I found the flat roads easy but the hills almost impossible. Surprisingly, now it’s the opposite. A long flat ride can be both boring and tiring as you never experience that fantastic feeling of freedom when speeding downhill. Years ago, going uphill left me breathless. Now I have learned to take hills slowly. When I set off, I’m full of energy and the first hundred metres are amazing; the next couple of kilometres are a bit tiring; but on the whole, the experience is very enjoyable. Bicycling is like any other form of exercise I have tried as it is never a task but always a pleasure. The physical benefits are obvious but the mental benefits are equally important. When you are bicycling, you breathe fresh air, have time to think and can relax.

第一節
One possible version:
Dear Charles,
I wanted to share some exciting news with you. I’m back from the summer science camp and thought you’d enjoy hearing about it.
The camp was filled with lots of fun activities. We did experiments, listened to talks from famous scientists, and visited nearby science centers. My favorite part was working on a little robot that had to find its way through a puzzle, which was tough but really enjoyable.
The best thing I got from it was learning more about how science works and how much fun it can be to make new discoveries. Plus, I also made friends who share my passion for science.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二節
One possible version:
Emily was obviously shocked. Her face glowed with a mixture of surprise and joy, and she looked at me in disbelief. I encouraged her by saying, “Emily, you have to believe in yourself. When you focus on what you are passionate about, you will be rewarded. You’ve wasted a lot of your time and energy this year. You need to think about what to do next.” She listened carefully.
After this conversation, I noticed a big change in Emily. She distanced herself from her previous friend group, found new study partners who shared her academic goals and even volunteered to study past the end of school. She began arriving early to class, often staying late to discuss material and seek clarification. Her once frequent absences due to distractions were replaced by a steady dedication to her studies. As a teacher, I am happy to see the big change take place in a student. I always stand to the point that teachers should not give up their students.
