On March 14, math and science lovers around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day. Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly. It is sometimes written as π. With the help of computers, mathematicians have been able to calculate (計(jì)算) Pi out to over a trillion decimal (小數(shù)) places, but there is still no end to the number. This makes Pi puzzling, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians. Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the number Pi.
For some people, the attraction of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular cultures. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to create a sense of mystery, often the symbol Pi is used.
People also love trying to memorize the digits of Pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Most teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The world record for reciting (背誦) the most digits of Pi is held by Lv Chao of China, who successfully recited Pi out to nearly 67,890 decimal places.
Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pies and with fun pi-related games and activities. Princeton, New Jersey, used to hold a birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 4. There was also a “Walk a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together. A Long March 5 rocket took off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province on May 3, 2024. After flying for about 37 minutes, it successfully placed the Chang'e 6 robotic lunar probe(月球探測(cè)器) into an Earth-moon transfer trajectory(轉(zhuǎn)移軌道). Several days later the probe was programmed to land on the moon's far side and started its tasks, which would last about 53 days.
This is the world's first try to bring samples(樣本) from the moon's far side. For China, it's the second sample-return moon journey. Chang'e 5 successfully brought samples from the moon in the winter of 2020. Up to now, 10 moon sample-return tasks have been carried out by the United States, the former Soviet Union(前蘇聯(lián)) and China, but all these samples were collected from the moon's near side.
The moon's far side has always been a subject of scientific wonder because of its many mysteries. It's facing away from Earth and it can never be seen from Earth. It was once called the “dark side of the moon” even though it receives just as much sunlight as the near side.
Chinese researchers have found that the soil on the far side is much thicker than that on the near side, but they haven't found out the reason. Samples brought back by Chang'e 5 have helped scientists find that there were volcanic(火山的) activities on the near side around 2 billion years ago. Some scientists thought maybe volcanoes became inactive on the far side about 4 billion years ago. Is it true Samples from the far side will allow them to know the answer.
“Comparing the make-up of the far side samples from Chang'e 6 with those collected from the near side will be of great scientific value to the international community,” said Martin Sweeting, a famous professor of space engineering.
1.When did Chang'e 6 begin to work on the moon
A.On May 3, 2024.
B.After flying for about 37 minutes.
C.In the winter of 2020.
D.After landing on the moon's far side.

A.Once. B.Twice. C.Five times. D.Ten times.
3.According to the passage, the moon's far side ______.
A.receives less sunlight than the near side
B.has thicker soil compared with the near side
C.can be seen from Earth with powerful cameras
D.has more recent volcanic activities than the near side
4.What can we learn from Martin Sweeting's words
A.Chang'e 6 will stay longer on the moon for more tasks.
B.Chang'e 6 is carrying out a valuable task for the world.
C.Chang'e 6 will bring samples from both sides of the moon.
D.Chang'e 6 can compare samples before bringing them back.

When I first arrived in China, I knew little Chinese. And some of the Chinese words I 1 had something to do with food. I learned the names of a few dishes, but still didn't know most of the things I saw on Chinese restaurant menus. Luckily, there were 2 to help me.
Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food 3 it. But many restaurants I've been to in the US don't. What is the 4 for the difference
One thing I've definitely(明確地) 5 about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is in the US. A common way to 6 someone in China is to ask them if they've eaten yet. Food is just a bigger deal here—and having pictures of food on menus is part of that. Some menus are almost like works of art, with beautiful photos.
Another thing is the 7 of the dishes. Chinese dishes sometimes have fanciful(別出心裁的)names like “palace guard chicken” or “three fresh things from the soil”. These are interesting names, but they don't really tell you 8 the dishes are like. Therefore, it's 9 to have pictures so you can actually see what you are going to eat.
There are 10 even more reasons. All I know is that I was very thankful to have those picture menus when I first came to China years ago.

April 23 is known as World Book Day. The idea of setting a day to encourage reading came out from UNESCO(聯(lián)合國(guó)教科文組織) in 1995. In fact, it started long before that in Spain. In 1922, Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés suggested the idea as a way to honor their famous writer Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later, the first celebration took place on October 7, Cervantes' birthday. In 1930, it was moved to April 23, the date of his death.
Every year since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The task of the city is to carry out activities to encourage “a culture of reading and spreading its values in all ages in and out of the country.”
Though no Chinese cities have been chosen as the World Book Capital so far, a recent national survey shows a steady(穩(wěn)定的) rise in reading as a habit in China. According to the survey, each Chinese adult read an average of 4.78 printed books and 3.33 e-books in 2022, both a bit higher than the figures from 2021. Besides, listening to audiobooks(有聲讀物) was another rising habit, with 35.5 percent of adults saying they were used to listening to them.
Reading books gives people the chance to look into different worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. Ancient Chinese believed in the saying: Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles. Reading is a way to learn from the past, understand the world, and get life wisdom (智慧). So make every day World Book Day!

The music band Coldplay is taking actions to protect the environment. This includes using their fans' energy to help provide electricity for their performances. In this way, they use electricity without adding carbon gases(碳?xì)怏w) to the air. The band hopes to cut the amount of CO2 given out by its business activities by 50 percent.
The Coldplay stars have added special dance floors and energy-storing bicycles to their latest world tour performance. The purpose is to get fans to help produce electricity by dancing and riding. Each dance floor can support many people. It creates electricity when people move on it. Each of the bikes can create an average of 200 watts(瓦特) of electricity. In order to encourage fans to dance or ride more during the performance, they even have competitions to find out which group of fans can create the most electricity.
“Being green is a good business model. That's what we'd like to show,” said Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. “The changes will bring a sense of belonging to the fans. Everything in our show is planned to bring everyone into the same group, singing together. It makes us feel part of a community.”
Coldplay has taken other steps to protect the environment. One of its tour stages(舞臺(tái)) uses recycled steel. The band also hopes to set up the world's first tour battery(電池) system, made from 40 recycled electric car batteries. The hope is to power the whole show with batteries.

After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad R ntgen(1845-1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation(放射線) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones(骨頭). Later, R ntgen took a photo of his wife's hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray It's because R ntgen couldn't explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery(外科手術(shù)).
R ntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize(諾貝爾獎(jiǎng)) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn't think; I investigated(研究).” R ntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. One of my earliest memories is playing “shops”with my granddad when I was 5 years old. After 1 school at 15, I worked in a fruit shop, but I had no 2 how to run my own shop back then.
Several years later, I got married. My husband Eric and I heard about a shop for sale in the nearby village. We had a look and decided to have a shop of our own. That was January 1973. We were a bit 3 at shop keeping, so we often didn't know what the customers were asking for. But we soon learned.
You can tell by the weather how 4 it's going to be. On wet days there are very few people around, and when it's 5 people want bread and milk, as they're worried about being snowed in. When it's hot, everyone buys cold drinks and ice cream.
More people shop online nowadays, but they still come here for things missing from their order. I've kept up with technology and have a card reader, but the shop itself hasn't changed much. Now, as I'm getting older, it's open from 7 am to 6 pm on weekdays, 6 closing at 8:30 pm. However, I open until 2 pm at weekends.
Eric passed away 16 years ago, but I 7 considered closing the shop. I love it all— talking to the customers and getting what they want. There are customers who come in two or three times a day, and we see several generations(代) of families. Customers often tell me their 8 and I offer advice if I can.
It was the 50th anniversary(周年紀(jì)念) of the shop on January 13 this year. I wanted to do something 9 , so I held a party and had drinks and snacks with customers. Why do Chinese people drink hot water Many westerners find it so interesting that they always see Chinese people drink hot water no matter which season it is. For lots of Chinese people, nothing is more common than drinking hot water every day. But for most of the westerners, the idea of drinking hot water is really strange since they drink cold water even in winter. Hot water vs cold water, which one is better Follow us to find an ideal answer.
Eating habits
We all know that Chinese people prefer hot meals every day. What's more, some parents always teach their children to drink hot water with meals, because they think mixing cold water with hot meals is really bad for the stomach.
In western countries, westerners often have food with high calories(卡路里), such as hamburgers and cheese. They need cold drinks to cool them off.
Medical ideas
Under the influence of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese people believe that drinking hot water is helpful to almost all kinds of cold symptoms (寒癥). They think hot water can wash away the coldness in your body, so you can feel less painful.
For most westerners, the idea of drinking hot water is strange enough. They believe that drinking hot water may weaken your body immunity(免疫力) and make you get ill easily.

The English club will perform the textbook drama Yu Gong Moves the Mountains at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in our school's auditorium.
The drama tells the story of an old man called Yu Gong who tried his best to move the mountains that blocked the way for the villagers to get out of the valley. Although Yu Gong was old and it seemed an impossible task to move such high mountains, he still decided to move the mountains with his family. He also asked his sons and grandsons to continue to move the mountains after his death. The Emperor of Heaven was moved by Yu Gong, so he sent two gods to help him. The story teaches us that nothing is impossible as long as we work hard and we should never give up.
We are looking forward to your coming and we welcome your opinions and suggestions after watching the performance.
