Jack Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited (繼承) a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn’t happy at all. “北斗”星 亮晶晶
今年6月我國成功發射了第四顆“北斗”導航衛星。過后不久，美國《太空新聞》雜志就撰文稱，“北斗”系統堪與美國的GP S（G l o b a lPositioning System全球定位系統）媲美，是對美國科技和軍事優勢的重大挑戰。
讓美國人憂心忡忡的“北斗”系統是我國完全自主建立的衛星導航系統。按照“先區域、后全球”的兩階段發展方針，“北斗”系統將于明年形成覆蓋我國及周邊地區的能力。2020年之前，我國還將發射30多顆衛星，最終組成完整的北斗衛星導航系統，并為全球提供商業導航、定位和通信服務。
目前，“北斗”系統已被聯合國確認為全球衛星導航系統的“核心供應商”之一，它與美國的GPS系統、歐盟的伽利略系統和俄羅斯的格洛納斯系統并稱世界四大衛星導航系統。
擁有自己的衛星導航系統，是許多國家夢寐以求的目標。法國前總統希拉克曾感慨，歐盟如果沒有自己的衛星定位系統，歐洲將不可避免地成為美國的附庸。現在世界上絕大多數的軍民定位導航應用使用的都是美國的GPS系統，就連我國的民用導航和定位市場，GPS也達到了95％的占有率。一旦美國關閉GPS，后果不堪設想。2003年，我國中遠公司的一條遠洋貨輪，剛通過馬六甲海峽駛入印度洋，就被美國軍艦攔阻，要求停船檢查。我國貨輪沒買美軍的賬，繼續航行。可沒過多久，船長發現這條船的GPS導航定位儀失效了。后來才知道，是美國海軍對中國貨輪的GPS進行了定點屏蔽。因此，建設“北斗”系統對維護我國國家安全和經濟發展具有不可估量的作用。
1983年，我國開始衛星導航系統的研究，1994年正式定名為“北斗”衛星導航定位系統。2000年10月31日，我國發射了第一顆“北斗”衛星，同年12月21日第二顆“北斗”升空，2003年5月25日，第三顆“北斗”衛星進入太空。目前“北斗一號”已有四顆衛星在太空遨游。
我國的“北斗”系統起步雖比技術最成熟的美國GPS晚了20年，但在技術上并沒有落后多少，相反還有著自己的特點。
第一個特點是既能知道“我在哪里”，也能知道“你在哪里”。以在大洋中遇險的船舶為例，只要船舶發出定位信號，不但船舶自己知道身處何方（我在哪里），地面控制中心也能同時鎖定船舶位置（你在哪里）實施救援。而美國目前的GPS系統只提供用戶自身請求的“我在哪里”服務，“你在哪里”沒有開通。
第二個特點是快速定位。這是目前上世界上最先進的技術。從用戶發出定位要求到收到結果，“北斗”系統只需1秒鐘。而在這1秒鐘內，整個系統要完成發送申請信號、上傳衛星、經地面控制中心計算出位置，再從衛星將定位信息返送用戶等一整套流程。而美國的GPS定位需要幾秒至幾十秒不等。另外“北斗”系統的民用定位精度為1.2米，而GPS為10米。第三個特點是短信功能。“北斗”系統用戶與用戶、用戶與地面控制中心之間能實現最多120個漢字的雙向短信通信功能。目前美國的GPS系統還無法提供這種通信服務，GPS用戶只能單向接收衛星提供的導航和定位信號。
目前我國“北斗”系統的主要用戶是軍隊，另外還有一些國家機關和大型企業。
2008年，在抗擊5·12汶川地震時，“北斗”系統發揮了重要作用。當時震中映秀鎮的通信系統癱瘓，是空降部隊拿著
“北斗”系統手持機迅速將汶川的災情傳遞了出來。
“北斗”系統總設計師孫家棟說，未來十年，我國“北斗”系統將大范圍地應用到生活領域。中國百姓將從此擺脫靠外國人導航的時代。
